Seated machine shoulder press demonstrated

Working position

Setup

Sit with the back fully supported, handles level with the shoulders.

Execution

Press the handles overhead without locking hard, then lower under control.

Coaching cues

  • Back stays against the pad
  • Breathe out on the press
  • Stop short of a hard lockout

Common fault

Arching the low back off the pad to finish the rep

Fix: Lower the load, or reduce the range so the back stays supported.

Muscles trained

Primary: Deltoid (delts)

Secondary: Trapezius (traps)Triceps brachii (triceps)

Regression and progression

Easier: This is the entry-level variation.

Harder: No harder variation recorded.

Rule

Never advance complexity and load in the same week. When the variation gets harder, the load comes down.
