Hypertension
Elevated blood pressure. Exercise is beneficial but the screening threshold and the Valsalva caution both matter.
Prescribe
- Moderate aerobic activity most days, building toward 150 minutes weekly
- Resistance training twice weekly at moderate intensity
- Continuous breathing through every repetition
Avoid, and why
- Breath-holding and the Valsalva manoeuvre under load
- Maximal or near-maximal lifting without clearance
- Training when resting blood pressure is 160/90 or higher without medical advice
